Cut cancer risk by 23 percent
Cut cancer risk by 23 percent:
Danish Kræftens Bekæmpelse has recently published a major study showing that the risk of bowel cancer can be reduced by 23 percent if people follow the five given lifestyle advices. The study is published in the prestigious British Medical Journal (BMJ) this week.
Norway is the world when it comes to the spread of this cancer. In 2007, about 3,400 Norwegians discovered cancer of the colon or rectum, and it is the most common type of cancer for both sexes combined. Annual death around 1500 Norwegians of bowel cancer.
Now the Danish researchers believe that nearly a quarter of bowel cancer cases could have been avoided - if only people were better at being healthy.
Five tips
Here are the five lifestyle advice that reduces the risk of this cancer:
• Avoid smoking.
• Be physically active for half an hour every day.
• Moderate alcohol consumption. Max seven drinks per week for women and max 14 for men.
• Eat healthy.
• Avoid getting a waistline exceeding 102 cm for men and 88 cm for women.
The Danish study shows that it is not so big lifestyle changes before it makes a difference. The more of the advice one can follow, the less the cancer risk.
Kræftens Bekæmpelse does not deny that this is about well-known lifestyle.
- Big difference
- It makes a big difference if we follow the recommendations we get. According to the survey, it can reduce abtallet cancer cases by 13 percent, if each additional Danish fulfilled one of the five councils. We all lived up to all five councils, would reduce the number of cancer cases by 23 percent, said Anne Tjønneland, consultant and manager in Kræftens Bekæmpelse.
The survey is based on 55,487 Danish men and women aged 50 to 64 years. They were followed for ten years, having first filled out a questionnaire on various lifestyle factors. 678 persons were diagnosed colorectal cancer during the follow-up period.
Only one percent of the participants lived up to all five of advice not to smoke, drink moderately, have normal waistline, eating healthy and exercising daily. 25 percent lived the four councils, 40 percent lived three and eight percent lived just up to one or none of the lifestyle recommendations.
- The risk of cancer decreases for each recommendation you live up to. Therefore, it is much to be gained for people who have the most unhealthy lifestyle and live up to only a few of the recommendations. The nice thing is that there are some very specific advice for which we are familiar with already, "said Tjønneland.
